WORKING CHILDREN AND

APPRENTICESHIP EDUCATION

SYSTEM

Approximately 250 million children are working in the World.

According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child declared in 1998 by United Nations, no child labour that affects children's health, education, physical and psychosocial development will be allowed.

In Turkey:

According to article 3308 of Apprenticeship and Vocational Education Law, apprentices receive vocational practices in their work places and vocational education at Apprenticeship and Non-formal Education General Directorate of the Ministry of National Education.

Apprentices attend Apprenticeship Education Centers once a week and work for the remaining 5 days.

CHILD-TO-CHILD EDUCATION

Child-to-Child is an effective approach to promote interactive learning in addressing physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional and social development of a child. Working children (apprentices as well) are likely to face more risk because of their working environment and conditions. Through Child-to-Child activities, working children will be able to learn how to identify risks/problems they are likely to face and what to do about it. This approach consists of 6 steps:

Expansion of the Activity

Evaluation "Did it work? How can we make it more effective?"

Implementation "Let's do it!"

Discussion and Planning "How can we best share our findings with our friends? A drama or posters?"

Data Collection "Let's find out about it!"

Topic Selection " What is the problem in our community?"

ACTIVITIES SAMPLES

Isparta Apprenticeship Education Center

The Activity Group (8 people) chose the topic of "Work Safety and Risk Factors" for their first Child-to-Child activity. They accordingly organized data collection from related bodies such as local labour unions and inspectors. They presented role plays in the school and put posters with messages up on the school walls. After this school activity, the Group decided to carry out the same activity targeting out-of-school working children.

Kirsehir Apprenticeship Education Centre

The Activity Group (10 people) has conducted a survey on the subjects of 'effects of smoking on health' and found out that smoking is prevalent among working children (42%). The Activity Group drew cartoons on 'non-smoking' and put them up on the school walls. They also prepared role plays and performed in front of the class. Then, they organized a seminar and discussion group in school for awareness-raising for non-smoking. Evaluation was carried out at the end of the activity. The Group found that their friends in school and workplaces and families were all aware of the Child-to-Child activity they carried out and now have better knowledge of hazards of smoking. The Group continues their non-smoking campaign in school and community.
