SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN DECEMBER OF 2002
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the year of 2002. According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in the year of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Yozgat, Kütahya, Çorum, Edirne, Erzurum and Samsun (city center). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Kayseri, Rize, Çorum and Sivas.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the year of 2002 have been given in the table below.

(..) It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute..
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in the year of 2002 compared to the previous year are; Çorum with 179%, Samsun (City Center) with 177%, Balıkesir with 89%, Yozgat with 85% and Nevşehir with 50%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous year, are; Niğde (Bor) with 39%, Niğde (City Center) with 31%, Kırşehir with 27%, Rize with 23% and Kastamonu with 11%. Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in the year of 2002 compared to the previous year are; Yozgat with 138%, Kırıkkale with 113% Balıkesir with 67%, Ankara with 55%, and Bursa (City Center) with 49%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous year are;Samsun (City Center) with 41%, Kastamonu with 32%, Malatya with 15%, Manisa with 14% and Afyon 9%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, in the year of 2002, Target Limit Value (TLV) exceeded in the all measurement stations of Ankara and in İzmir, Alsancak, Konak- Municipality, Region of Çamlık and Ödemiş. While Short Term Limit Value (STL) exceeded in Cebeci and Küçükesat in Ankara, STL did not exceeded in the all measurement stations in İzmir. First warning level limit value (1stWLL) exceed in Küçükesat in Ankara and did not exceeded any measurement stations in İzmir. For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV has been exceeded in the all measurement stations in Ankara. Furthermore TLV exceeded in the measurement stations of Alsancak, Çamlık Region, Konak- Municipality and Ödemiş in İzmir. STL has been exceededin Cebeci, Demetevler and Yenidoğan in Ankara but 1stWLL did not exceed in any measurement stations. STL and 1stWLL did not exceed in the any measurement stations in İzmir.
Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in the year of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
