THE RESULTS OF
THE MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE, 2002
State Institute of Statistics has been collecting data on the current
status of waste services and waste disposal sites of all municipalities
in Turkey within the scope of Environmental Statistics since 1994.
Municipalities not being constituted in 2002 were not covered.
According to the results of municipal solid waste statistics, waste of
2984 municipalities out of 3215 were collected in 2002.
Municipalities receving solid waste services, 12.70 million tonnes
summer, 12.67 million tonnes in winter and 25.37 million tonnes of
yearly average of solid waste were collected. From these results daily
amount of solid waste per capita is calculated as 1.32 kg/capita-day in
summer, 1.34 kg/capita-day in winter and 1.34 kg/capita-day for yearly
average.
Of the 25.37 million tonnes of solid waste collected in 2977
municipalities in 2002, 45.9% (11.64 million tonnes) were
disposed of in municipality dump, 27.8% (7.05 million tonnes)
were disposed of in controlled landfill, 15.5% (3.93 million tonnes)
were disposed of in metropolitan municipality dumps, 2.9% (744 thousand
tonnes) were disposed of in another municipalitys dump,2.0% (500
thousand tonnes) were disposed of by burial, 1.5% (383 thousand tonnes)
were disposed of in composting plant, 0.9% (221 thousand tonnes)
were disposed of by burning in an open area, 0.8% (196 thousand
tonnes) were disposed of into rivers.
