SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONSIN THE YEAR OF 2000
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the year of 2000.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the year of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Denizli, Uşak, Yozgat and Çorum. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kütahya, Çorum, Diyarbakır, Sivas and Zonguldak.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the year of 2000 are given in the following table.

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period did not reach to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the sulphurdioxide concentraion in 2000 compared to the previous year are; Niğde (City Center) with 65%, Çanakkale (City Center), Ordu and Siirt with 40%, Ankara with 24%, Sivas with 22% and Elazığ with 21%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the SO2concentration compared to the previous year are; Edirne with 60%, Bolu (City Center) and Konya with 59%, Kayseri with 40%, Balıkesir and Nevşehir with 21% and Uşak with %19.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in 2000 compared to the previous year are; Elazığ with 50%, Ordu with 38%, Siirt with 37%, Kütahya with 36% and Samsun (City Center) with 35%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous summer season are; Bolu (City Center) with 67%, Edirne with 48%, Aksaray with 22%, Afyon and Kayseri with 18% and Ağrı with 17%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir provincial centers in 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in all of the measurement stations except Demetevler in Ankara and the measurement stations of Bakırköy, Beyoğlu and Eminönü in İstanbul on the other hand did not exceed in any measurement stations in İzmir (City Center), İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) was exceeded in the measurement station of İncirli in Ankara but not exceeded in any measurement stations in İstanbul and İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers. First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) was not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV was excedded in all of the measurement stations in Ankara except for Hasköy and all of the measurement stations in İstanbul except for Bakırköy and Göztepe on the other hand TLV did not exceed in any measurement stations in İzmir. STL was exceeded in the measurement stations of Balgat, Cebeci, Küçükesat and Yenidoğan in Ankara but  not exceeded in any measurement stations in İstanbul and İzmir. 1. WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir.
