SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN OCTOBER OF 2002




The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in October of 2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in October of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Yozgat, Erzurum, Kütahya, Uşak and Çorum. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Kayseri, Çorum, Sivas and Erzurum.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in October of 2002 were given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in October of 2002 compared to the previous October are; Uşak with 147%, Çorum with 145%, Isparta with 97%, Balıkesir with 72% and Niğde (City Center) with 56%. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous October are; Kırşehir with 78%, Niğde (Bor) with 67%, Kütahya with 44%, Erzurum with 43% and İzmir (City Center) with 39%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in October of 2002 compared to the previous October are; Uşak with 162%, Niğde (City Center) with 100%, Sivas with 85%, Tekirdağ with 75% and Balıkesir with 50%. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous October are; Kastamonu with 70%, Kırşehir with 46%, Gaziantep with 40%, Afyon with 37% and Yozgat with 20%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir (City Center).

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in October of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
