SULPHURDIOXIDE
(SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN JANUARY OF 2003
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in January, 2003.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in January of 2003 are as follows in descending order; Elazığ, Tekirdağ, Samsun (City center), Erzurum and Ağrı. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Diyarbakır, Kayseri, Ağrı, Zonguldak and Konya.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in January of 2003 were given in the table below.

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that
period have not reached to the Institute.
For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum
rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous
January, are; Bursa (İnegöl) with 57%, Bursa (Orhangazi) with 53%, İzmir
(Ödemiş) with 50%, Çanakkale (City center) with 45% and Kırıkkale with 43%.
Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in January of 2003, no evaluation could be done.
