SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN DECEMBER OF 2001

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in December of 2001.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in December of 2001 are as follows in descending order; Tekirdağ, Samsun (City Center), Kütahya, Erzurum and Kırşehir. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Malatya, Diyarbakır, Zonguldak, Kastamonu and Sivas.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in December of 2001 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in December of 2001 compared to the previous December are; Samsun (City Center) with 709%, Bolu (City Center) with 328%, Konya with 100%, Balıkesir with 89% and Siirt with 52%. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous December are; Sinop with 73%, Erzincan with 63%, Çorum with 56%, Ankara with 55% and Burdur with 54%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in December of 2001 compared to the previous December are; Bolu (City Center) with 469%, Malatya with 92%, Kastamonu with 74%, Rize with 70%, Balıkesir and Sinop with 54%. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous December are; Niğde (City Center) with 63%, Kırıkkale with 60%, Manisa with 58%, Uşak with 53%, Ankara and Konya with 50%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers, in December of 2001, Target Limit Value (TLV) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara on the other hand TLV exceeded in the measurement station of Konak in İzmir (City Center). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV exceeded in Cebeci and Sıhhiye in Ankara and Çamlık Region in İzmir. STL and 1.st WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir (City Center).

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in December of 2001, no evaluation could be done.
