SULPHUR DIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATIONS IN THE YEAR OF 2003

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in the year of 2003 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Tekirdağ, Bingöl, Edirne and Çorum. For the same period, provincial centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Balıkesir, Kayseri, Çorum and Gaziantep.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the year of 2003 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in the year of 2003 compared to the previous year are; Manisa with 88%, Niğde (City Center) with 52%, Bursa (City Center) with 29%, Bingöl, Çanakkale (City Center) and Niğde (Bor) with 22%, Bolu with 18%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous year are; Yozgat with 66%, Afyon with 30%, Erzincan with 29%, Çorum and Uşak with 28%, Malatya with 27%.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in the year of 2003 compared to the previous year are; Niğde (Bor) with 105%, Niğde (Merkez) with 100%, Edirne with 27%, Manisa with 25% and Bingöl with 22%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM concentration compared to the previous year are; Yozgat with 58%, Malatya with 37%, Sivas with 34%, İzmir (Merkez) and Uşak with 33%, Afyon and Hatay (İskenderun) with 30%.

Particulate Matter (Smoke)

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the year of 2003, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) ve İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, Target Limit Value (TLV) was not exceeded in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Bergama) district center but was exceeded in İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) ve İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in  İstanbul in the year of 2003, no evaluation could be done.
