SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN FEBRUARY OF
2000
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in February of 2000.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in February of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Yozgat, Çanakkale (City Center), Ağrı and Gaziantep. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Sivas, Diyarbakır, Ağrı, Gaziantep and Manisa.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in February of 2000 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that
period have not reached to the Institute.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in February 2000 compared to the previous February are; Elazığ with 167%, Çorum with 164%, Siirt with 136%, Ankara with 116% and Bingöl with 103%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous February, are; Konya with 58%, Burdur and Kastamonu with 41%, Balıkesir and Kayseri with 28%, Nevşehir with 27%, Adıyaman and İstanbul with 23%.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in February of 2000 compared to the previous February are; Elazığ with 158%, Sinop with 133%, Siirt with 103%, Kırıkkkale with 94% and Bingöl with 93%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous February are; Adıyaman and Nevşehir with 33%, Burdur with 29%, Giresun with 26%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 22% and Afyon with 21%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş), in February of 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV) excedded in the measurement stations in Balgat, Cebeci, Hasköy, İncirli and Mamak in Ankara, Beyoğlu and Eminönü in İstanbul on the other hand TLV did not exceed in İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş).
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV excedded in Cebeci, Demetevler, İncirli, Küçükesat, Sıhhiye, and Yenidoğan in Ankara and all measurement stations except Bakırköy and Göztepe in İstanbul. STL and 1. WLL did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.
Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in February of 2000, no evaluation could be done.
