SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATIONS IN DECEMBER OF 2003

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in December of 2003 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Çanakkale (City Center), Tekirdağ, Erzurum and Kırşehir. For the same period, provincial centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Çorum, Isparta, Bolu and Kırşehir.

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in December of 2003 have been given in the table below.

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in December of 2003 compared to the previous December are; Çorum with 132%, Bolu with 100%, Bursa (City Center) with 82%, Çanakkale (City Center) with 59% and Kastamonu  with 52%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous December are; Samsun (City Center) with 79%, Karaman with 73%, Elazığ with 65%, Balıkesir with 59% and Isparta with 54%.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in December of 2003 compared to the previous December are; Bolu with 105%, Çorum with 79%, Gaziantep with 34%, Amasya with 31% and Bursa (City Center) with 28%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM concentration compared to the previous December are; Elazığ with 57%, Erzurum with 56%, Karaman with 54%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 49% and Manisa with 48%.

Particulate Matter  (Smoke)

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in December of 2003, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded Küçükesat in Ankara but was not exceeded in İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) ve İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) ve İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in Bahçelievler, Cebeci, Demetevler and Sıhhiye in Ankara. But Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) ve İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in  İstanbul in December of 2003, no evaluation could be done.
