SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN NOVEMBER OF 2002

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in November of 2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in November of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Yozgat, Isparta, Erzurum and Denizli. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kayseri, Denizli, Balıkesir, Sivas and Konya.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in November of 2002 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in November of 2002 compared to the previous November are; Niğde (City Center) with 139%, Bolu (City Center) with 88%, Isparta with 81%, Burdur with 78% and Balıkesir with 63%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous November, are; Sinop with 50%, Kırşehir and Tekirdağ with 37%, Edirne and Kastamonu with 36%, Niğde (Bor) with 34% and Kırıkkale  with 30%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in November of 2002 compared to the previous November are; Edirne with 420%, Kırıkkale with 272%, Niğde (City Center) with 150%, Bolu (City Center) with 96% and Kayseri and Kütahya with 76%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous November are; Sinop with 64%, Tekirdağ with 41%, Kastamonu with 36%, Niğde (Bor)  with 30% and Yozgat with 28%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in November of 2002, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in Demetevler station in Ankara and was not exceeded in İzmir, Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) were not exceeded in any of the measurement stations in Ankara and  İzmir provincial centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV was exceeded in the measurement stations of Cebeci, Demetevler, Küçükesat, Sıhhiye  in Ankara and  exceeded Alsancak, Çamlık Regional and Konak in İzmir provincial center. STL and  1. WLL was not exceeded in any of the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in November of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
