SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN JANUARY OF 2001

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in january of 2001.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in January of 2001 are as follows in descending order; Ağrı, Kütahya, Kırşehir, Erzurum and Niğde (Bor). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Ağrı, Erzurum, Zonguldak, Sivas and Kütahya.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in January of 2001 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in January 2001 compared to the previous January are; İzmir (Ödemiş) with 168%, Ağrı with 114%, Elazığ with 102%, Kastamonu with 98% and Niğde (Bor) with 97%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous January, are; Sinop with 87%, Niğde (City Center) and Tekirdağ with 60%, Konya with 58%, Balıkesir with 56%, Bilecik (Bozüyük) with 50%.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in January of 2001 compared to the previous January are; Malatya with 149%, Ağrı with 100%, Kırşehir with 48%, Konya with 43% and Burdur with 37%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous January are; Niğde (City Center) with 64%, Sinop with 55%, Bilecik (City Center) with 32%, Eskişehir with 31% and Tekirdağ with 27%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers, in January of 2001, Target Limit Value (TLV) excedded in the measurement stations of Çankaya and Sıhhiye in Ankara. On the other hand TLV did not exceed in İzmir (City Center), İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV exceeded in all of the measurement stations except İncirli and Küçükesat in Ankara. But TLV did not exceed in any measurement stations in İzmir (City Center). STL and 1.WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir.
Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations in İstanbul in January of 2001 could not be reached to the Institute, no evaluation could be done.
