SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATIONS IN JANUARY OF 2004

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in January of 2004 are as follows in descending order; Tekirdağ, Çanakkale (City Center), Kütahya, Kırşehir and Ağrı. For the same period, provincial centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Çorum, Kütahya, Ağrı, Isparta and Konya.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in January of 2004 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in January of 2004 compared to the previous year are; Çanakkale (City Center) with 282%, İzmir (Ödemiş) with 148%, Çorum with 142%, Bolu with 103% and Kırşehir with 53%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous year are; Elazığ with 74%, Samsun (City Center) with 71%, Zonguldak with 60%, Balıkesir with 51% and Niğde (City Center) with 46%.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in January of 2004 compared to the previous year are; Bursa (İnegöl) with 248%, Çorum with 186%, Uşak with 163%, Samsun (City Center) with 100% and Bolu with 92%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM concentration compared to the previous year are; İzmir (Bergama) with 76%, İzmir (Ödemiş) with 65%, Elazığ with 64%, Karaman with 52% and  İzmir (City Center) with 50%.

Particulate Matter (Smoke)

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in January of 2004, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in Küçükesat in Ankara but was not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in measurement stations of Cebeci, Küçükesat and Sıhhıye in Ankara. But, TLV was not exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir provincial center, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in  İstanbul in January of 2004, no evaluation could be done.
