SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE) CONCENTRATIONS
IN THE WINTER SEASON (OCTOBER-MARCH) OF 2001-2002

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the winter season of 2001-2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the winter season of 2001-2002 are as follows in descending order; Yozgat, Samsun (City Center), Kütahya, Bursa (Orhangazi) and Tekirdağ. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kütahya, Diyarbakır, Sivas, Ağrı and Çorum.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the winter season of 2001-2002 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the sulphurdioxide concentration in the winter season of 2001-2002 compared to the previous winter season are; Samsun (City Center) with 787%, Bolu (City Center) with 157%, Yozgat with 146%, Tekirdağ with 64% and Konya with 63%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the SO2 concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Erzincan with 39%, Niğde (City Center) with 32%, Burdur and Sinop with 30%, Isparta, Niğde (Bor) and Uşak with 19%, İzmir (Bergama) with %17.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in the winter season of 2001-2002 compared to the previous winter season are; Yozgat with 321%, Bolu (City Center) with 256%, Balıkesir with 93%, Rize with 71% and Tekirdağ with 68%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Niğde (City Center) with 37%, Erzurum with 35%, Manisa with 30%, Uşak with 26% and Kırıkkale with 20%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the winter season of 2001-2002, Short Term Limit Value (STL) did not exceed in any measurement stations of Ankara, İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the PM concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, STL has been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci, Demetevler and Yenidoğan in Ankara while STL has not been exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir.

Since measurement results of 2001-2002 winter season have not been reached to the Institute, no evaluation could be done.
