SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATIONS IN FEBRUARY OF 2004

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in February of 2004 are as follows in descending order; Çanakkale (City Center), Kütahya, Ağrı, Tekirdağ and Kırşehir. For the same period, provincial centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Balıkesir, Rize, Çorum, Ağrı and Kütahya.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in February of 2004 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in February of 2004 compared to the previous year are; Çanakkale (City Center) with 175%, Kocaeli (Gölcük) with 117%, Bursa (City Center) with 92%, Manisa with 59% and İzmir (Merkez) with 53%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous year are; Samsun (City Center) with 75%, Zonguldak with 68%, Edirne with 63%, Niğde (City Center) with 58% and Elazığ with 56%.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in February of 2004 compared to the previous year are; İzmir (Ödemiş) with 229%, Bursa (İnegöl) with 194%, Uşak with 185%, Bursa (City Center) with 165% and Çorum with 144%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM concentration compared to the previous year are; Niğde (City Center) with 61%, Elazığ with 60%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 47%, Yozgat with 41% and  Çanakkale (City Center) with 41%.

Particulate Matter (Smoke)

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in February of 2004, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in measurement stations of Cebeci and Sıhhıye in Ankara. But, TLV was not exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir provincial center, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in February of 2004, no evaluation could be done.
