SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

CONCENTRATIONS IN OCTOBER OF 2000

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in October of 2000.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in October of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Uşak, Yozgat, Denizli and Kırıkkale. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Çorum, Kayseri, Zonguldak and Ankara.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in October of 2000 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in October of 2000 compared to the previous October are;  Yozgat with 178%, Isparta with 116%, Çanakkale (City Center) with 100%, Konya with 86%, Edirne and Niğde (City Center) with 53%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous October, are; Kayseri and Tekirdağ with 54%, Elazığ with 50%, Balıkesir with 43%, Afyon with 36% and Kütahya with 31%.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in October of 2000 compared to the previous October are; Malatya with 83%, Elazığ with 59%, Eskişehir with 40%, Rize with 39% and Ordu with 36%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous October are; Tekirdağ with 43%, Afyon with 37%, Niğde (City Center) with 36%, Bilecik (Bozüyük) and Sivas with 28% and Kırıkkale with 23%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in October of 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) did not exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Bergama) district center.
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci, Demetevler and Yenidoğan in Ankara. On the other hand TLV have not been exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir (City Center). STL and 1stWLL did not exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers .
Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in October of 2000, no evaluation could be done.

DETAILED DATA OF THE PROVINCIAL AND DISTRICT CENTERS CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE TABLES GIVEN BELOW.
