SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN MARCH OF 2003

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in March, 2003.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in March of 2003 are as follows in descending order; Samsun (City Center), Kütahya, Ağrı, Burdur and Karaman. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Isparta, Ağrı, Gaziantep and Karaman.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in March of 2003 were given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in March of 2003 compared to the previous March are; Karaman with 169%, Manisa and Niğde (City Center) with 160%, Sinop with 150%, Burdur with 95% and İzmir (Bergama) with 85%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous March, are; Yozgat with 60%, Uşak with 44%, Diyarbakır with 26%, Antalya with 16% and Gaziantep with 10%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in March of 2003 compared to the previous March are; Niğde (City Center) with 425%, Kırıkkale with 235%, Samsun (City Center) with 233%, Niğde (Bor) with 210% and Bursa (İnegöl) with 142%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous March are; İzmir (City Center) with 67%, İzmir (Bergama) with 45%, İzmir (Ödemiş), Malatya and Yozgat with 43%, Kırşehir with 33% and Kastamonu with 30%.

According to the SO2 concentrations obtained from the measurement stations in March 2003. Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1st WLL) were not exceeded in any of measurement station in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations obtained from the measurement stations, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1st WLL) were not exceeded in any of measurement station in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in March of 2003, no evaluation could be done.
