THE PRESIDENCY OF STATE INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS, IN THE EXTENT OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL STATISTICS DECLARED THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF THE 1995 MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY WASTE INVENTORY

State Institute of Statistics has carried out an annual survey in order to obtain data required for the evaluation of the environmental pollution levels caused by the manufacturing industry establishments since 1992.

Manufacturing Industry Waste Inventory has been applied to 2079 establishments having 25 or more employees representing 88.33% of total production and 75.60% of total employment. In the scope of this inventory, the following data were collected; environmental employment and expenditures, amount of water supplied by sources, amount of water consumption, amount of wastewater discharged by type of receiving bodies, type and capacity of the wastewater treatment plants, amount of sludge generated by the treatment plants, number of establishments having wastewater discharge license and license for gaseous emissions, amount and disposal methods of  industrial solid waste, source of the noise and the number of employees to be exposed to the noise by the noise levels and exposure time.

Establishments treating their wastewater have been evaluated according to their wastewater treatment plant. It is determined that, 559 establishments have at least one wastewater treatment plant, 76 establishments have only domestic wastewater treatment plant, 402 establishments have only industrial wastewater treatment plant and 73 establishments have both domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants among the 594 establishments treating their wastewater. According to the evaluations of  common usage of the wastewater treatment plants, it is determined that; 20 establishments have used their domestic wastewater treatment plant with the other establishment, and 31 establishments have used their industrial wastewater treatment plant with the other establishment (see Table 1).

According to the evaluations; altough 513 establishments had industrial wastewater treatment plants, only 477 establishments gave information on the type of the treatment plant units. Among these 477 establishments, 191 establishments treated 211 million m3 industrial wastewater mechanically, 267 establishments treated 80 million m3 industrial wastewater chemically, 162 establishments treated 242 million m3 industrial wastewater biologically and 16 establishments treated 534 thousand m3 industrial wastewater by advanced treatment processes in 1995 (see Table 2).

According to the evaluations; 151 establishments giving information on the type of the treatment plant units, among the 169 establishments using  the domestic wastewater treatment plants, 17 establishments treated 4.28 million m3 domestic wastewater mechanically and 151 establishments treated 51.93 million m3 domestic wastewater biologically in 1995 (see Table 3).

Of all the establishments evaluated in the extent of the survey, it is determined that 18.09 % of the establishments (376 establishments) have wastewater discharge license, 81.91% of the establishments (1703 establishments) do not have wastewater discharge license. Among the 376 establishments, 45 establishments are public sector establishment and 331 establishments are private sector establishments (see Table 4).

According to the similar evaluation for the license for gaseous emissions; of all the establishments in the extent of the survey, 8.9% of them (185 establishments) have license for gaseous emissions and 91.10% of them (1894 establishments) do not have license for gaseous emissions (see Table 5).

It is determined that 2004 million m3 of water have been supplied in 1995 by 2065 establishments stating their amount of water supplied. Percentage of supplied water by sources have been evaluated as 17.58% from seas, 27.44% from wells, 9.57% from rivers, 21.31% from springs, 2.06% from lakes and 3.67% from dams. 1417 million m3 of water have been supplied for 247 establishments in the public sector. Of this amount, 23.08% have been supplied from seas, 12.13% from rivers, 13.77% from wells, 4.91% from dams, 26.66% from springs and 2.89% from lakes. SIS stated that, 1818 establishments in the private sector, supplied 586 million m3 of water of which 60.50% from wells, 3.40% from rivers, 8.38% from springs, 12.79% from municipal drinking water network and 4.29% from seas (see Table 6).

2065 manufacturing industry establishments in Turkey consumed 1896 million m3 of water in 1995. Of this amount, 74.08% was consumed by 247 establishments in the public sector and 25.92% was consumed by 1818 establishments in the private sector. While 1749 million m3 of supplied water contributed to the production activities such as; process, cooling and boiling, 114 million m3 of  water supplied (0.03% of total water supplied) was utilized for domestic purposes and 32 million m3 of  water supplied (1.71% of total  water supplied) was used for other purposes (e.g.; irrigation and fire water). Manufacturing industry establishments reused 441.7 million m3 of water consumed (23.29%). Of all the industrial sectors, basic metal industry (37 coded sector) consumed 59.09% of total, food, beverages and tobacco industry (31 coded sector) consumed 14.85% of total, textile industry (32 coded sector) consumed 10.95% of total and chemical industry sector (35 coded sector) consumed 7.23% of total water consumed (see Table 7).

According to the 1995 Manufacturing Industry Waste Inventory results, a total of 692 million m3 of wastewater, generated from 2065 establishments, discharged to the receiving bodies. In addition, SIS stated that among 692 million m3 of total wastewater, percentage of discharged wastewater by receiving bodies is as follows; 29.85% to rivers, 31.39% to seas, 32.73% to city sewerage, 2.30% to septic tank 3.74% to lakes, dams and other receiving bodies (see Table 8).

It is determined that, 1462 establishments discharged 592.8 million m3 (85.65% of total wastewater discharged) industrial wastewater and 2020 establishments discharged 99.3 million m3 (14.35% of total wastewater discharged) domestic wastewater (see Table 8).

Among 2079 establishments, 942 establishments discharged 387 million m3 industrial wastewater to receiving bodies (e.g.; sewerage, sea, lake, stream, land, dam and septic tank) without treatment. Of this amount, 29.06% was discharged to rivers, 37.96% was discharged to seas and 29.09% was discharged to sewerage without treatment. SIS stated that, 258 million m3 of industrial wastewater was originated from 167 establishments in the public sector, 54.43% of this amount (258 million m3) was discharged to seas, 20.52% was discharged to sewerage and 22.45% was discharged to rivers without treatment. 129 million m3 industrial wastewater was originated from 775 establishments in the private sector. 5.11% of this amount (129 million m3) was discharged to seas, 46.19% was discharged to  sewerage, 42.25% was discharged to rivers without treatment  (see Table 9).

Among 2079 establishments only 425 establishments discharged 189 million m3 of wastewater to receiving bodies after treatment (see Table 9).

It is stated that, 35.36% and 38.49% of 88.14 million m3 industrial wastewater originated from 53 establishments in the public sector were discharged to seas and rivers respectively after treatment      (see Table 9).

Among the 2079 establishments in the survey, 95 establishments discharged 17.42 million m3 of industrial wastewater after primary treatment.

And 324 establishments discharged 58.61 million m3 domestic wastewater after treatment, while 1696 establishments discharged 40.72 million m3 domestic wastewater without treatment               (see Table 9).

1704 establishments created 17.53 million tonnes industrial solid waste in 1995. 38.95% of total industrial solid waste was generated from 199 establishments in the public sector and 61.05% of that was generated from 1505 establishments in the private sector. Of this solid waste 66.25% (11.61 million tonnes) was disposed of, 25.34% (4.44 million tonnes) was sold and 8.41% (1.47 million tonnes) was recycled or reused (see Table 10).

SIS stated that; among 11.61 million tonnes of disposed industrial waste; 25.34% disposed of in municipal dumps, 7.77% was stored, 21.05% was disposed to rivers, and 45.84% was disposed of  by other different methods. Moreover, it is stated that; only 4 establishments disposed their industrial solid waste by landfilling and only 1 establishment disposed its solid waste in the incinerator            (see Table 11).
