SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE
MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN JANUARY OF 2000
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in January of 2000.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in January of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Adıyaman, Bilecik (Bozüyük), Balıkesir and Yozgat. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations indescending order stated as Diyarbakır, Sivas, Zonguldak, Çorum and Kütahya.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in January of 2000 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that
period have not reached to the Institute.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in January 2000 compared to the previous January are; Siirt with 265%, Niğde (City Center) with 138%, Bilecik (Bozüyük) with 84%, Çorum with 73% and Sinop with 65%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous January, are; Ağrı with 52%, Edirne with 40%, Bursa (City Center) with 38%, Burdur with 37%, Kayseri and Aksaray with 36%.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in January of 2000 compared to the previous January are; Siirt with 230%, Sinop with 110%, Bitlis with 103%, Niğde (City Center) with 96% and Kütahya with 83%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous January are; Ağrı with 60%, Çanakkale (City Center) with 48%, Aksaray with 44%, Kahramanmaraş with 40% and Bursa (City Center) with 33%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş), in January of 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV) excedded in all of the stations in Ankara except Demetevler and Küçükesat, and Eminönü in İstanbul on the other hand TLV did not exceed in İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) exceeded in İncirli in Ankara but did not exceed in the measurement stations in İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş). First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş).
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV excedded in all of the measurement stations except Bahçelievler and Çankaya in Ankara and Eyüp, Fatih and Zeytinburnu in İstanbul. STL and 1. WLL did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.
Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in January of 2000, no evaluation could be done.
