THE PRESIDENCY OF STATE INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS, IN THE EXTENT OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL STATISTICS DECLARED THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF THE 2001 MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE STATISTICS

Data about the current status of drinking water network, sewerage, treatment plants, solid waste services and solid waste disposal facilities of all municipalities in Turkey have been collected within the scope of "Environment Statistics for Municipalities", since 1994.

According to the results of the survey, in 2001 municipal solid wastes were collected in 2915 municipalities out of 3215 (Table 1).

In the 2915 municipalities receiving solid waste services, 12.5 million tonnes in summer, 12.6 million tonnes in winter and as a total 25.1 million tonnes of solid waste were collected in 2001. From these results, Daily amount of solid waste per capita is calculated as 1.28 kg/capita-day in summer, 1.32 kg/capita-day in winter and 1.31 kg/capita-day for annual average (Table 2).

Of the 25.1 million tonnes of solid waste collected in 2915 municipalities in 2001, 40% (10.1 million tonnes) were disposed of in municipality dumps, 33% (8.3 million tonnes) were disposed of in controlled landfill sites, 15% (3.7 million tonnes) were disposed of in metropolitan municipality dumps, 2% (482 thousand tonnes) were buried, 1% (344 thousand tonnes) were burned in an open area, 1% (218 thousand tonnes) were disposed of in composting plant, 0.4% (101 thousand tonnes) were dumped into rivers (Table 3).

In the same period, it was determined that the number of municipalities, in which medical waste was collected separately were 432 and the amount of medical waste collected was 71 thousand tons. Of this amount, 18% was disposed of by controlled landfilling and 15% by incineration.

(Table 4).

2247 dumping sites were in operation in 2001. There were agricultural land near 1105 dumps, forest near 629 dumps, residential area near 351 dumps, pasture near 614 dumps, water resources near 137 dumps, touristic facilities near 23 dumps within 1000 metres distance from the dumping sites (Table 5).
