SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN NOVEMBER OF 2001

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in November of 2001.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in November of 2001 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Yozgat, Edirne, Erzurum and Tekirdağ. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kayseri, Kütahya, Çorum, Sivas and Balıkesir.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in November of 2001 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in November of 2001 compared to the previous November are; Yozgat with 179%, Bolu (City Center) with 133%, Kırşehir with 128%, Kastamonu with 79% and Siirt with 57%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous November, are; Erzincan with 73%, Ankara with 60%, Burdur with 54%, Çorum with 50% and Uşak with 37%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in November of 2001 compared to the previous November are; Yozgat with 400%, Bolu (City Center) with 206%, Siirt with 135%, Niğde (Bor) with 76% and Balıkesir with 59%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous November are; Kırıkkale with 76%, Kütahya with 51%, Erzincan with 47%, Uşak with 44% and Sivas with 42%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in November of 2001, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Ödemiş) district center.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the measurement stations of Cebeci, Demetevler, Küçükesat, Sıhhiye and Yenidoğan in Ankara but not exceeded in İzmir provincial center. STL have been exceeded in the station of Cebeci in Ankara but not exceeded in İzmir provincial centers. 1. WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in November of 2001, no evaluation could be done.
