SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN MARCH OF 1999

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in March of 1999.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in March of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Konya, Yozgat, Edirne and Ağrı. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations indescending order stated as Afyon, Diyarbakır, Zonguldak, Ağrı and Antalya.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in March of 1999 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in March of 1999 compared to the previous March are;  Konya with %301, Burdur with %273, Kütahya with %106, Malatya with %48 and Aksaray with %44. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous March, are; Balıkesir with %55, Sivas with %52, Çanakkale (Çan) with %49, Muğla (City Center) and Tokat with %45 and Bilecik (City Center) and Niğde (City Center) with %39.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in March of 1999 compared to the previous March are; Sakarya with %117, Bursa (City Center) with %61, Afyon with %58, Kütahya with %53, Bingöl with %47. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous March are; Bolu (Düzce) with %58, Balıkesir with %55, Sinop with %52, Tokat with %50 and Bolu (City Center) with %48.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in March of 1999, Target Limit Value (TLV) has been exceeded in the station of Eyüp in İstanbul while none of the measurement stations have exceeded TLV in Ankara, İzmir (City Center) and İzmir (Bergama). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) have not been exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Demetevler in Ankara, Eyüp, Fatih and Zeytinburnu in İstanbul. STL and 1stWLL has not been exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.

Since the particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in March of 1999, no evaluation can be done.
