The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in October of 1999.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in October of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Kayseri, Afyon, Kahramanmaraş and Kırıkkale. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations indescending order stated as Kütahya, Zonguldak, Afyon, Kayseri and Ankara.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in October of 1999 compared to the previous October are;  Aksaray with 93%, Elazığ with 90%, Bursa (İnegöl) with 80%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 49% and Bingöl with 41%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous October, are; Konya with 73%, Isparta with 65%, Bolu (Merkez) with 32%, Manisa with 29% and Eskişehir with 27%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in October of 1999 compared to the previous October are; Isparta with 183%, Bingöl with 89%, Zonguldak with 70%, Niğde (City Center) with 57% and Bursa (İnegöl) with 54%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous October are; Nevşehir with 50%, Kastamonu with 46%, Adıyaman with 28%, Giresun and Kahramanmaraş with 23% and Samsun with 22%.
 

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in October of 1999, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1^stWLL) did not exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir (Bergama).
 

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Bahçelievler, Cebeci, Sıhhiye and Yenidoğan in Ankara. STL and 1^stWLL did not exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara.

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul and İzmir in October of 1999, no evaluation could be done.
