SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN JANUARY OF 2002

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in January of 2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in January of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Yozgat, Samsun (City Center), Tekirdağ, Ağrı and Bursa (Orhangazi). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Ağrı, Sivas, Diyarbakır, Denizli and Çorum.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in January of 2002 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in January of 2002 compared to the previous January are; Samsun (City Center) with 1190%, Tekirdağ with 874%, Sinop with 600%, Bolu (City Center) with 184% and Konya with 183%. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous January are; Uşak with 40%, Erzincan with 34%, Burdur with 31%, Rize with 26% and Niğde (City Center) with 24%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in January of 2002 compared to the previous January are; Yozgat with 355%, Bolu (City Center) with 331%, Tekirdağ with 200%, Rize with 140% and Bursa (City Center) with 121%. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous January are; Elazığ with 33%, Malatya with 32%, Uşak with 22%, Kayseri with 15% and Manisa with 14%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers, in January of 2002, While Target Limit Value (TLV) exceeded in all measurement stations in Ankara, TLV exceeded in the measurement stations of Çamlık Bölgesi and Konak in İzmir (City Center). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, while TLV exceeded in all measurement stations in Ankara, TLV exceeded in the measurement stations of Alsancak, Çamlık Region and Konak in İzmir. STL exceeded in the measurement stations of Cebeci, Demetevler and Yenidoğan. On the other hand STL did not exceed in any measurement stations in İzmir. 1.st WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir (City Center).

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in January of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
