SULPHUR DIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATIONS IN MARCH OF 2004

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in March of 2004 are as follows in descending order; Çanakkale (City Center), Kütahya, Çorum, Erzurum and Tekirdağ. For the same period, provincial centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Rize, Çorum, Kütahya, Isparta and Gaziantep.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in March of 2004 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in March of 2004 compared to the previous year are; Çorum with 133%, Kastamonu with 73%, İzmir (Ödemiş) with 57%, Kocaeli (Gölcük) with 55% and Uşak with 41%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous year are; Samsun (City Center) with 80%, Karaman with 74%, Niğde (Bor) with 70%, Balıkesir and Hatay (İskenderun) with 60%, Niğde (City Center) and Bolu with 52%.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)

(..): It couldn’t be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in March of 2004 compared to the previous year are; Çorum with 319%, İzmir (Ödemiş) with 165%, Kastamonu with 103%, Rize with 79% and İzmir (City Center) with 43%. For the same period provincial centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM concentration compared to the previous year are; Karaman with 86%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 71%, Çanakkale (City Center) with 67%, Manisa with 58% and Kırıkkale with 51%.

Particulate Matter (Smoke)

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in March of 2004, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Bergama) and İzmir (Ödemiş) district centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Ödemiş) district center.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in March of 2004, no evaluation could be done.
