SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE) CONCENTRATIONS
IN THE SUMMER SEASON OF 1999

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the summer season of 1999.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the summer season of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Kayseri, İzmir (Bergama), Kütahya, Kahramanmaraş and Adıyaman. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kayseri, Antalya, Zonguldak, Bitlis, Denizli and Kütahya.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the summer season of 1999 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the sulphurdioxide concentraion in the summer season of 1999 compared to the previous summer season are; Kütahya with 61%, Kayseri and İzmir (Bergama) with 44%, Malatya with 38%, Kahramanmaraş with 23% and Kırşehir with 22%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the SO2 concentration compared to the previous summer season are; Yozgat with 70%, Bolu (Merkez) with 62%, Balıkesir with 44%, Kırıkkale with 37% and Bilecik (Bozüyük) with %31.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in the summer season of 1999 compared to the previous summer season are; Aksaray with 90%, Sakarya with 43%, Zonguldak with 42%, Eskişehir and Niğde (Bor) with 38% and Elazığ with 30%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous summer season are; Bolu (Düzce) with 87%, Yozgat with 70%, Kırşehir with 48%, Bolu (City Center) with 47% and Kırıkkale with 27%.

According to the SO2 and particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the summer season of 1999, Short Term Limit Value (STL) has not been exceeded in any measurement stations of Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Bergama).
