SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN DECEMBER OF 2000

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in December of 2000.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in December of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta and Çorum. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations indescending order stated as Kütahya, Zonguldak, Çorum, Sivas and Afyon.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in December of 2000 were given in the table
below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in December of 2000 compared to the previous December are; Sinop with 325%, Yozgat with 41%, Isparta with 40%, Ağrı with 27% and Burdur with 18%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous December, are; Konya with 79%, Bolu (City Center) with 71%, Balıkesir with 67%, Kayseri with 51% and Gaziantep with 43%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in December of 2000 compared to the previous December are; Samsun (City Center) with 106%, Malatya with 32%, Kütahya with 30%, Nevşehir with 29% and Ağrı with 23%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous December are; Bolu (City Center) with 82%, Yozgat with 64%, Rize with 53%, Gaziantep with 48% and Eskişehir with 44%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in December of 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV) excedded in Bahçelievler, Cebeci, Çankaya, Küçükesat and Sıhhiye in Ankara on the other hand TLV did not exceed in measurement stations in İzmir (City Center) and İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İzmir (City Center) and İzmir (Ödemiş).

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV excedded in all measurement stations except for Bahçelievler in Ankara on the other hand TLV did not exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir. STL exceeded in Cebeci, Küçükesat and Yenidoğan but STL did not exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir (City Center). 1. WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir (City Center).

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in December of 2000, no evaluation could be done.
