SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN FEBRUARY OF 1999
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in February of 1999.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in February of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Çanakkale (Çan), Kütahya, Konya, Edirne and Adıyaman. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter (smoke) concentrations indescending order stated as; İçel, Afyon, Diyarbakır, Adıyaman, Antalya and Zonguldak.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in February of 1999 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in February of 1999 compared to the previous February are; Burdur with %273, Konya with %144, Kırıkkale with %100, Çorum with %40 and Kastamonu with %37. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous February, are; Ankara and Yozgat with %54, Niğde (Bor) with %50, Sivas with %49, Siirt with %46 and Erzurum with %42.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in February of 1999 compared to the previous February are; Çanakkale (City Center) with %112, Isparta with %108, Niğde (City Center) with %70, Sakarya with %60, Antalya with %52. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous February are Yozgat with %72, Bolu (Düzce) with %70, Bursa (City Center) with %61, Kocaeli (Gebze) with %60 and Sinop with %53.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in February of 1999, Target Limit Value (TLV) has been exceeded in the stations of Bakırköy, Bayrampaşa ve Gaziosmanpaşa in İstanbul while none of the measurement stations have exceeded TLV in Ankara. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) have not been exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Demetevler, İncirli and Küçükesat in Ankara, Bakırköy, Bayrampaşa, Eyüp, Gaziosmanpaşa, Maltepe and Zeytinburnu in İstanbul. STL and 1stWLL have not been exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in February of 1999, no evaluation can be done.
