SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE
MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN OCTOBER OF 2001
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent
of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution
related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke)
concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in October
of 2001.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in October of 2001 are as follows in descending order; Erzurum, Kütahya, Kırşehir, Yozgat and Denizli. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Rize, Kayseri, Çorum and Kastamonu.
Provincial and district centers having
the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke)
concentrations in October of 2001 have been given in the table below.

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.
Provincial and district
centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration
in October of 2001 compared to the previous October are; Rize with 110%,
Kastamonu with 109%, Yozgat with 100%, Erzincan with 93% and Malatya with
73%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum
rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous October are; Uşak with
66%, İzmir (City Center) with 59%, Niğde (City Center) with 36%, Erzurum
with 34% and Tekirdağ with 33%.
According to the SO2
concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in October of 2001,
Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning
Level Limit Value (1stWLL) did not exceeded in any measurement
stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.
For the same period,
according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement
stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci, Sıhhiye and
Yenidoğan in Ankara. On the other hand TLV have not been exceeded in any
measurement stations in İzmir (City Center). STL and 1stWLL
did not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial
centers.
Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in October of 2001, no evaluation could be done.
