SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN NOVEMBER OF 1999

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in November of 1999.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in November of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Niğde (Bor), Balıkesir, Adıyaman and Kayseri. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations indescending order stated as Kayseri, Zonguldak, Sivas, Kütahya and Afyon.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in November of 1999 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in November of 1999 compared to the previous November are; Niğde (Bor) with 288%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 163%, Bursa (İnegöl) with 122%, Burdur and Elazığ with 74% and Ankara with 64%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous November, are; Yozgat with 68%, Çanakkale (Merkez) with 40%, Nevşehir with 31%, Sivas with 30% and Kastamonu with 28%.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in November of 1999 compared to the previous November are; Hatay (İskenderun) with 180%, Niğde (Bor) with 158%, Niğde (City Center) with 116%, Kütahya with 68% and Elazığ with 53%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous November are; Yozgat with 54%, Nevşehir with 39%, Ağrı with 27%, Eskişehir with 23% and Afyon and Samsun with 22%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in November of 1999, Target Limit Value (TLV) excedded in Balgat, Küçükesat and Mamak in Ankara and in İzmir (Bergama) on the other hand TLV did not exceed in measurement stations in İstanbul. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Bergama).
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV excedded in all of the measurement stations except Çankaya in Ankara and except Üsküdar in İstanbul. STL did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara except Hasköy and İstanbul. 1. WLL did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.
Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in November of 1999, no evaluation could be done.
