SULPHUR DIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER CONCENTRATIONS IN OCTOBER OF 2004

Provincial centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide concentrations in October of 2004 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Erzurum, Niğde (City Center), Kayseri and Gaziantep.  For the same period, provincial centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kütahya, Kayseri, Niğde (City Center), Balıkesir and Kocaeli (Gebze).

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in October of 2004 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphur dioxide concentration in October of 2004 compared to the previous year are;  Elazığ with 80%,  Kütahya with 58% , İzmir (City Center) with 50%, Niğde (Bor) with 49% and Niğde (City Center) with %40. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous year are;  Bolu with 56%, Hatay (İskenderun) with 53%, Yozgat with 40%, Ankara with 26% and Balıkesir with 21%.

Provincial centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in October of 2004 compared to the previous year are;  Samsun (City Center) with 278% , Niğde (City Center) with 152%, Kütahya with 75%, Balıkesir with 68% and Niğde (Bor) with 55%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM concentration compared to the previous year are;  Hatay (İskenderun) with 50%, Bolu with 46%, İzmir (City Center) with 41%, Yozgat with 40% and Ankara with 32%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in October of 2004, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1st WLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in measurement station of Cebeci in Ankara. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1st WLL) were not exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in October of 2004, no evaluation could be done.
