SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

CONCENTRATIONS IN FEBRUARY OF 2002

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in February of 2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in February of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Yozgat, Bursa (Orhangazi), Ağrı and Samsun (City Center). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Ağrı, Sivas, Diyarbakır and Çorum.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in February of 2002 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in February of 2002 compared to the previous February are; Samsun (City Center) with 763%, Yozgat with 229%, Bolu (City Center) with 144%, Konya with 123% and Kayseri with 112%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous February, are; Rize with 47%, İzmir (Ödemiş) with 46%, Niğde (City Center) with 42%, Tekirdağ with 37% and Kastamonu with 35%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in February of 2002 compared to the previous February are; Yozgat with 543%, Balıkesir with 252%, Bolu (City Center) with 237%, Bursa (City Center) with 160% and Kütahya with 83%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous February are; Samsun (City Center) with 28%, Niğde (City Center) with 25%, Kastamonu with 19%, Sinop with 15% and Eskişehir with 7%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in February of 2002, Target Limit Value (TLV) exceeded in the measurement stations of Cebeci and Sıhhiye in Ankara. On the other hand TLV did not exceed in any measurement stations in İzmir. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, while TLV have been exceeded in all measurement stations in Ankara, TLV exceeded in the measurement stations of Alsancak and Konak in İzmir. STL exceeded in the measurement station of Cebeci in Ankara. On the other hand STL did not exceed in any measurement stations in İzmir. 1stWLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir.

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in February of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
