IN THE WINTER SEASON OF 1999-2000
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the winter season of 1999-2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Adıyaman, Uşak, Denizli and Kırşehir. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Sivas, Kayseri, Zonguldak, Kütahya and Afyon.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the winter season of 1999-2000 have been given in the table below.

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in the winter season of 1999-2000 compared to the prevous winter season are; Niğde (Bor) with 86%, Elazığ with 78%, Sinop with 67%, Kütahya with 64% and Niğde (City Center) with 57%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Nevşehir with 33%, Bolu (City Center) with 32%, Ağrı with 31%, Çankırı with 26% and Afyon with 23%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the winter season of 1999-2000, Short Term Limit Value (STL) exceeded in Cebeci and İncirli in Ankara on the other hand STL has not been exceeded in any measurement stations of İstanbul and İzmir.
For the same period, according to the PM concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, STL has been exceeded in the stations of Bahçelievler, Balgat, Cebeci, Demetevler, Hasköy, İncirli and Yenidoğan in Ankara and Eyüp in İstanbul while STL has not been exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir.
