SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN MARCH
OF 2000
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in March of 2000.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in March of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Yozgat, Çanakkale (City Center), Uşak and Edirne. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Diyarbakır, Zonguldak, Sivas, Afyon and Antalya.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in March of 2000 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that
period have not reached to the Institute.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in March 2000 compared to the previous March are; Çorum with 407%, Sinop with 233%, Elazığ with 148%, Niğde (City Center) with 118% and Bingöl with 63%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous March are; Bolu (City Center) with 53%, Nevşehir with 47%, Burdur with 46%, Balıkesir with 42% and Aksaray with 30%.
Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in March of 2000 compared to the previous March are; Elazığ with 112%, Sinop with 93%, Bilecik (City Center) with 82%, Rize with 72% and Tokat with 63%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous March are; Bolu (City Center) with 45%, Nevşehir with 41%, Kırşehir with 35%, Ağrı with 31% and Giresun with 27%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş), in March of 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir (Ödemiş) on the other hand TLV exceeded in Bakırköy in İstanbul. Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Ödemiş).
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV did not exceed in Ankara on the other hand TLV exceeded in Beyoğlu in İstanbul. STL and 1. WLL did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.
Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in March of 2000, no evaluation could be done.
