SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN JANUARY OF 1999

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in January of 1999.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in January of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Isparta, Çanakkale (Çan), Ağrı and Adıyaman. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Ağrı, Zonguldak, Adıyaman, Afyon and İçel.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in January of 1999 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in January of 1999 compared to the previous January are;  Çanakkale (Çan) with %675, Burdur with %154, Isparta with %147, Malatya with %130 and Kırıkkale with %44. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous January, are; Siirt with %67, Niğde (City Center) and Yozgat with %56, Eskişehir with %44, Kocaeli (City Center) with %42 and İstanbul with %40.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in January of 1999 compared to the previous January are; Sakarya with %224, Aksaray with %102, Malatya with %59, Ağrı  with %45 and Antalya with %38. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous January are; Yozgat with %68, Kocaeli (Gebze) with %65, Siirt with %64, Bolu (Düzce) with %50 and Kütahya with %49.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in January of 1999, Target Limit Value (TLV) has been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci and Sıhhiye in Ankara, Eyüp and Zeytinburnu in İstanbul while none of the measurement stations have exceeded TLV in İzmir (City Center) and İzmir (Ödemiş). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) have not been exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir (City Center) and İzmir (Ödemiş).

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci, Demetevler, İncirli, Küçükesat, Sıhhiye and Yenidoğan in Ankara, all of the measurement stations except Göztepe in İstanbul. STL have been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci in Ankara and Zeytinburnu in İstanbul. In addition, 1stWLL has not been exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara and İstanbul.

Since the particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in January of 1999, no evaluation can be done.
