SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE) CONCENTRATIONS
IN THE YEAR OF 1999

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the year of 1999.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the summer season of 1999 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Edirne, Kayseri, Adıyaman and Konya. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kayseri, Zonguldak, Afyon, Antalya, Kütahya and Sivas.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the year of 1999 are given in the following table.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period did not reach to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the sulphurdioxide concentraion in 1999 compared to the previous year are; Malatya with 47%, Kütahya with 46%, Niğde (Bor) with 32%, Bursa (İnegöl) with 27% and Edirne with 26%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the SO2 concentration compared to the previous year are; Yozgat with 59%, Balıkesir with 40%, Çanakkale (City Center) with 33%, Bilecik (City Center) and İstanbul with 28% and Bolu (City Center) with %26. Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in 1999 compared to the previous year are; Aksaray with 42%, Bursa (City Center) with 37%, Manisa with 33%, Kayseri with 30% and Niğde (Bor) with 29%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous summer season are; Yozgat with 62%, Sinop with 39%, Balıkesir with 35%, Nevşehir with 23% and Siirt with 21%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir provincial centers in 1999, Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in all of the measurement stations except Demetevler in Ankara and the measurement stations of Bakırköy, Bayrampaşa, Eminönü, Eyüp, Gaziosmanpaşa, Zeytinburnu in İstanbul and Karşıyaka and İzmir (Bergama) measurement stations in İzmir. Short Term Limit Value (STL) was exceeded in the measurement station of Cebeci in Ankara but not exceeded in any measurement stations in İstanbul and İzmir. First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) was not exceeded in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir.
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV was excedded in all of the measurement stations in Ankara and the measurement stations of Bakırköy, Bayrampaşa, Eminönü, Eyüp, Fatih, Gaziosmanpaşa, Göztepe, Kadıköy, Maltepe, Şişli, Ümraniye, Üsküdar, Zeytinburnu in İstanbul. STL was exceeded in the measurement stations of Bahçelievler, Balgat, Cebeci, Demetevler, Hasköy, İncirli and Yenidoğan in Ankara and Eyüp, Zeytinburnu in İstanbul. 1. WLL was exceeded in the measurement stations of Balgat in Ankara but not exceeded in İstanbul.
Since the particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İzmir in 1999, no evaluation could be done.
