According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the winter season of 1998-1999 are as follows in descending order; Çanakkale (Çan), Kütahya, Konya, Edirne and Muğla (Yatağan). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Afyon, Zonguldak, Adıyaman, Ağrı and Diyarbakır.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the winter season of 1998-1999 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in the winter season of 1998-1999 compared to the prevous winter season are; Aksaray with 106%, Sakarya with 68%, Isparta with 52%, Antalya with 25% and Manisa with 18%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Yozgat with 70%, Balıkesir with 51%, Kocaeli (Gebze)with 46%, Bolu (Düzce) with 45% and Siirt with 40%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the winter season of 1998-1999, Short Term Limit Value (STL) has not been exceeded in any measurement stations of Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir.
For the same period, according to the PM concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, STL has been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci and Yenidoğan in Ankara and Zeytinburnu in İstanbul while STL has not been exceeded in none of the measurement stations in İzmir.
