CONCENTRATIONS IN MARCH OF 2001
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in March of 2001.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in March of 2001 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Tekirdağ, Elazığ, Ağrı and Gaziantep. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Afyon, Sivas and Antalya.
Provincial and district
centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate
matter (smoke) concentrations in March of 2001 have been given in the table

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in March of 2001 compared to the previous March are; Malatya with 97%, Kastamonu with 37%, Bolu (City Center) with 13%, Kırklareli (City Center) and Kırşehir with 9% and Burdur with 2%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous March are; Çanakkale (City Center) with 70%, Yozgat with 69%, Bursa (City Center) with 63%, Tokat with 61%, Samsun (City Center) with 50%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in March of 2001, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.
For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV have been exceeded in the stations of Yenidoğan in Ankara but not exceeded in any measurement stations in İzmir. STL and 1stWLL did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara.
Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in March of 2001, no evaluation could be done.
