SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE) CONCENTRATIONS IN THE WINTER SEASON (OCTOBER-MARCH) OF 2002-2003

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the winter season of 2002-2003.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the winter season of 2002-2003 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Erzurum, Elazığ, Edirne and Samsun (City Center). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kütahya, Kayseri, Diyarbakır, Zonguldak and Isparta.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the winter season of 2002-2003 have been given in the table below.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the sulphurdioxide concentration in the winter season of 2002-2003 compared to the previous winter season are; Niğde (City Center) with 125%, Manisa with 54%, Elazığ with 52%, Isparta with 37% and Balıkesir with 32%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the SO2 concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Bursa (Orhangazi) with 52%, Yozgat with 49%, Samsun (City Center) with 41%, Afyon with 35%, Ağrı with %26.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in the winter season of 2002-2003 compared to the previous winter season are; Niğde (City Center) with 375%, Bursa (İnegöl) with 81%, Bursa (Orhangazi) and Kırıkkale with 69%, Elazığ with 49% and Erzurum with 40%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Yozgat with 59%, Kastamonu with 53%, Afyon with 36%, Malatya with 34% and Ağrı with 26%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the winter season of 2002-2003, While Short Term Limit Value (STL) exceeded in the measurement stations of Cebeci and Küçükesat in Ankara, STL did not exceed in any measurement stations of İzmir provincial center and İzmir (Ödemiş) district center.

For the same period, according to the PM concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, STL has not been exceeded in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Ödemiş) district center.

Since the measurement results of winter season in the period of 2002-2003 have not been reached to the Institute, no evaluation could be done.
