SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN NOVEMBER OF 2000

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in November of 2000.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in November of 2000 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Çorum, Denizli, Isparta and Erzincan. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations indescending order stated as Kütahya, Sivas, Çorum, Kayseri and Zonguldak.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in November of 2000 were given in the table

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in November of 2000 compared to the previous November are; Sivas with 100%, Elazığ with 91%, Ankara with 42%, Malatya with 39% and Yozgat with 38%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous November, are; İzmir (Bergama) with 74%, Kırşehir with 66%, Bolu (City Center) with 49%, Niğde (Bor) with 39% and Balıkesir with 38%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in November of 2000 compared to the previous November are; Malatya with 187%, Kütahya with 139%, Samsun (City Center) with 108%, Elazığ with 100% and Denizli with 80%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous November are; Niğde (City Center) with 68%, Niğde (Bor) with 65%, Bolu (City Center) with 60%, Yozgat with 58% and Kırşehir with 41%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in November of 2000, Target Limit Value (TLV) excedded in Bahçelievler, Cebeci, Küçükesat and Sıhhiye in Ankara on the other hand TLV did not exceed in measurement stations in İzmir (Bergama). Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1. WLL) did not exceed in the measurement stations in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir (Bergama).

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV excedded in measurement stations in Cebeci, Demetevler, İncirli, Küçükesat, Sıhhiye and Yenidoğan in Ankara. STL and 1. WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara.

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in November of 2000, no evaluation could be done.
