SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN DECEMBER OF 2002

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in December of 2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in December of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Elazığ, Karaman and Samsun (City center). For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Kayseri, Manisa, Konya and Denizli.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in December of 2002 were given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

(..): It couldn't be evaluated since the comparable data for that period have not reached to the Institute.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in December of 2002 compared to the previous December are; Ankara with 279%, Manisa with 180%, Kayseri with 104%, Elazığ with 87% and Edirne with 86%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous December, are; Tekirdağ with 41%, Afyon with 33%, Rize with 32%, Samsun (City center) with 24% and Sinop  with 14%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in December of 2002 compared to the previous December are; Edirne with 500%, Niğde (City center) with 309%, Kırıkkale with 208%, Manisa with 206% and Bursa (İnegöl) with 191%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous December are; Kastamonu with 59%, Malatya with 42%, Afyon and Samsun (City center) with 34% and Sinop  with 20 with 28%.

Reagarding the SO2 concentrations measured in the provincial centerss of Ankara and İzmir in December, 2002 it is determined that Target Limit Value (TLV) was exceeded in all measurement station in Ankara and only in Alsancak, Çamlık Regional and Konak measurement stations in İzmir. The Short Term Limit Value (STL) was exceeded in Cebeci and Küçükesat stations in Ankara and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) was only exceeded in Küçükesat the measurement stations in Ankara. STL and 1stWLL values were not exceeded in any of the stations in İzmir.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, TLV was exceeded in all measurement stations in Ankara and  exceeded Alsancak and Konak in İzmir provincial center. STL and  1stWLL was not exceeded in any of the measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers.

Since the sulphur dioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in December of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
