SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE) CONCENTRATIONS
IN THE WINTER SEASON OF 2000-2001
The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in the winter season of 2000-2001.
According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in the winter season of 2000-2001 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Ağrı, Erzurum, Niğde (Bor) and Kırşehir. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as; Kütahya, Sivas, Zonguldak, Diyarbakır and Çorum.
Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in the winter season of 2000-2001 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)
PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in the particulate matter concentration in the winter season of 2000-2001 compared to the previous winter season are; Malatya with 108%, Kütahya with 36%, Ağrı with 32%, Burdur with 25%, Elazığ and Kastamonu with 21%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in the PM concentration compared to the previous winter season are; Yozgat with 55%, Bolu (City Center) with 53%, Niğde (City Center) with 47%, Rize with 37% and Eskişehir with 27%.
According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in the winter season of 2000-2001, Short Term Limit Value (STL) did not exceed in any measurement stations of Ankara, İzmir provincial centers and İzmir (Bergama) district center.
For the same period, according to the PM concentrations, obtained from
the measurement stations, STL has been exceeded in the stations of Cebeci,
Küçükesat and Yenidoğan in Ankara while STL has not been exceeded in any
measurement stations in İzmir.
