SULPHUR DIOXIDE (SO2) AND PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)
CONCENTRATIONS IN MARCH OF 2002

The Presidency of State Institute of Statistics, in the extent of the environmental statistics, declared the statistics on air pollution related to the sulphurdioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations of provincial and district centers in Turkey in March of 2002.

According to the statement of the State Institute of Statistics, provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphurdioxide concentrations in March of 2002 are as follows in descending order; Kütahya, Yozgat, Çorum, Uşak and Erzurum. For the same period, provincial and district centers having the maximum particulate matter concentrations in descending order stated as Kütahya, Afyon, Diyarbakır, Sivas and Zonguldak.

Provincial and district centers having the maximum sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (smoke) concentrations in March of 2002 have been given in the table below.

SULPHURDIOXIDE (SO2)

PARTICULATE MATTER (SMOKE)

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in sulphurdioxide concentration in March of 2002 compared to the previous March are; Samsun (City Center) with 454%, Çorum with 235%, Bolu (City Center) with 142%, Nevşehir with 139% and Yozgat with 115%. For the same period provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in SO2 concentration compared to the previous March, are; Kırşehir with 63%, Niğde (City Center) with 62%, Sinop with 52%, Kastamonu with 37% and Elazığ with 33%.

Provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of increase in particulate matter concentration in March of 2002 compared to the previous March are; Bolu (City Center) with 239%, Balıkesir with 196%, Bursa (City Center) with 140%, Kütahya with 73% and Yozgat with 62%. For the same period, provincial and district centers, having the maximum rate of decrease in PM compared to the previous March are; Niğde (City Center) with 50%, Samsun (City Center) with 37%, Sinop with 36%, Kastamonu with 35% and Konya with 20%.

According to the SO2 concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, in March of 2002, Target Limit Value (TLV), Short Term Limit Value (STL) and First Warning Level Limit Value (1stWLL) did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir provincial centers, İzmir (Ödemiş) district center.

For the same period, according to the particulate matter concentrations, obtained from the measurement stations, While TLV have been exceeded in the measurement stations of Cebeci, Demetevler and Yenidoğan in Ankara, TLV exceeded in the measurement stations of Alsancak and Konak in İzmir. STL and 1st WLL did not exceed in any measurement stations in Ankara and İzmir.

Since the sulphurdioxide and particulate matter concentrations could not be measured in İstanbul in March of 2002, no evaluation could be done.
